Testing with AI – sounds easy… or challenging?

Artificial Intelligence is everywhere

It writes texts, generates code, analyzes data — and yes, it’s already finding its way into software testing. At first glance, testing with AI sounds easy: faster test creation, smarter analysis, better coverage. But as many of us already know, reality is a bit more nuanced. We can build our own AI systems, integrate existing solutions, and of course write prompts.

Using Generative AI in testing can bring real value:

  • Faster creation of test cases, test data, and documentation
  • Support in test analysis and exploratory testing
  • Increased productivity and focus on higher-value testing activities
  • New ways to think about quality in complex systems

Sounds like magic, just write a prompt and fairy AI-godmother will do all the work, right? But in practice AI can be a powerful assistant when used correctly. Have you thought about:

  • Can we trust AI-generated results?
  • How do we avoid bias, hallucinations, security risks?
  • Where does human responsibility lie?
  • How can we use AI ethically, safely, and effectively in real projects?

Testing with AI is not about replacing testers. It’s about empowering testers with new skills — and that requires knowledge, structure, and practice. So how do we start? Here are some practical tips for testing

  • Validate everything
Let AI support test design, ideas, or analysis but always review results which are not always correct.
  • Protect data and confidentiality
Never share sensitive project or customer data with public AI tools.
  • Save prompts
Create a repository of effective prompts that can be reused and improved by the team.
  • Structure your prompts for better results
According to the ISTQB GenAI syllabus, effective prompts should include six key elements:
Role (who the AI should act as),
    Context (system, domain, or problem),
Task (what you want to achieve),
    Input data (requirements, examples, constraints),
Output format (table, list, test cases, etc.),
Quality criteria (coverage, risks, assumptions, limits).
