An Agile Business Analyst (Agile BA) works within an agile environment to ensure that business needs are clearly understood and that solutions deliver value. The role is considered part of modern Agile teams, working alongside developers and testers, even though Scrum did not originally define this role. Many organisations include an Agile BA within the team because of the value they bring in bridging business needs and technical delivery. The role collaborates closely with the Product Owner, helping to refine backlog items into clear user stories and acceptance criteria.
An Agile BA supports the team during sprint planning, daily stand-ups, backlog refinement and sprint reviews, and also engages with stakeholders outside the team to ensure the team has the right business context in conversations about requirements.
To develop a true understanding of the mindset that is required to work effectively in an agile environment, most professionals undertake Agile Fundamentals training. This provides a solid platform from which to recognise a required approach, and to choose the optimal techniques. Subsequent training in ICAgile Product Ownership and User Stories can then equip Agile BA’s with the toolbox necessary to participate in an agile team. BCS certified business analysis training is also useful to ensure a solid understanding of the traditional holistic BA role, and how the role is necessarily impacted by working in an agile environment.
